Steve McKenzie Consultant Engineer (SMCE) is a privately owned, multidisciplinary engineering consultancy headquartered in Townsville, North Queensland, established in 1994 and formally incorporated in 1997. What began as a civil and structural practice has grown into a team working across structural engineering, civil engineering, construction supervision, project management, and power and renewables.

What we do
We provide structural and civil design, construction supervision, contract administration, and project management, with a dedicated focus on power distribution and renewable energy infrastructure, including solar and wind farm substations, battery energy storage systems, and high-voltage switchyards. Our power and renewables work spans Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia and the Northern Territory, for clients including Powerlink, Yurika, and Queensland Rail.
Who we work with
Over nearly three decades we've delivered projects for state government departments, local councils, energy utilities, rail authorities, and private developers across North, Central and South-East Queensland, with a growing client base in New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia and the Northern Territory. We've also maintained a working relationship with a structural steel fabricator in mainland China for over ten years, supporting project delivery across Australia and New Zealand.
Our team
Our engineering team includes four Registered Professional Engineers (RPEQ) across structural and civil disciplines, bringing more than 70 years of combined industry experience, supported by senior design and drafting staff and project support. Our accreditations include NER, CPEng, MIEAust, RPEV, Tasmanian Building Services Provider, and Northern Territory Building Practitioners Board registration. Several of our engineers also hold Rail Industry Worker accreditation for rail corridor projects.
Where we work
Head office in Townsville, with a presence in Brisbane and a close working relationship with trusted local partners in regional centres including Mackay. Our registrations extend to Victoria, Tasmania and the Northern Territory, supporting project delivery across those jurisdictions as needed.
